Benson has been a member of the AASA since 2001, having been encouraged to join by AASA Past President and former Department of Surgery administrator at UCLA, Judy Duncan. At the time, Benson was the Administrator for the Divisions of General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Oncology at UCLA. In 2009, Benson left Los Angeles and went East where he became the Administrator for the Department of Surgery and the Department of Plastic Surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. In 2013, Benson returned to California and is currently the Chief Administrative Officer for the Department of Surgery at the University of California Davis Health System in Sacramento. In the AASA, Benson has served as the Western Regional Representative and the Education Chair. He was recently re-elected and is serving his second two year term as the Treasurer. His primary responsibilities are to manage the organizational business and financial activities of the AASA.
